Three (3) positions are open within the framework of the ALCEMIST ERC Synergy project. As these projects are within ALCEMIST, they will involve collaborations with each other as well as research stays with our partner institutes in the United Kingdom (the University of Cambridge) and in Portugal (NOVA University of Lisbon). A 36-month (extendable to 48 months) Ph.D. position will look at investigating the complex flow patterns of liquid crystal elastomer precursors made from cellulose and chitin nanocrystal suspensions; on polymerizing them into liquid crystal elastomers; and on characterizing their actuation. This is primarily an experimental physics and engineering project, with theory and modeling work to complement the work in the laboratory.
The other 12-month postdoctoral researcher position is a chemistry-focused position on modifying suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals through click chemistry and cross-linking to create novel, cellulose-based liquid crystal elastomer materials.
